Longhorns football coach Mack Brown is excited about the series between teams from the two states that usually reserve their animosity for their annual October gridiron matchup at the Texas State Fair in Dallas.
"I think it's great," Brown said in an interview on ESPN's First Take. "It brings so much attention on ESPN and nationally to this area. … So this will be a lot of fun to watch for people, not only nationally but especially in this area."
The hostile feelings between the two sides comes from being in different states, Brown said.
"Anytime you get a border situation, when people have to work together, that's what creates a rivalry," Brown said. "With Texas and A&M, so many people have family members that either went to one of the two schools and they're all Texans. It's not about crossing the river or crossing the border. But you go into Louisiana, you go into Oklahoma, you go into Arkansas, it gets a little more serious around here."
A former Oklahoma assistant, Brown has a unique perspective on the Mavericks-Thunder matchup because Kevin Durant spent one season at Texas before being drafted by in 2007. But he also coaches at Texas.
"Kevin Durant is one of the nicest young people I've ever been around," Brown said. "He is so humble. He is a great ambassador for the University of Texas and for sports and now the off the court. And he's just a phenomenal player. I didn't miss a game when he was here, other than if we were out recruiting or something because he's just an absolute star. But you pull for him because he's so nice. He was very close to our football players. He was at all the sporting events.
